Why this route

Most of Bavaria’s famous castles belong to a single story: the House of Wittelsbach, whose run stretches from Trausnitz, founded above Landshut in 1204, to the fall of the monarchy in 1918. This route threads seven of their houses into one drivable week, out to the three palaces that bankrupted Ludwig II and back through the dynasty’s working seats of power. It ends, fittingly, where the family began.
